Address for a US LLC: registered agent, virtual mailbox, virtual office or real office

A US LLC needs up to three different addresses: a registered agent in the state of formation, a mailing address for the IRS and post, and a physical address where the business is run. Banks and Stripe check the last one — and most refuse registered-agent, mailbox and virtual-office addresses for it.

Four kinds of address

  • Registered agent address. The street address of your registered agent in the state of formation. It receives legal papers (service of process) and state notices. Every LLC must have one.
  • Virtual mailbox (CMRA). A street address at a Commercial Mail Receiving Agency — iPostal1, Anytime Mailbox, Traveling Mailbox and similar. Mail is scanned and forwarded. USPS requires Form 1583 with two IDs; the address carries a box, suite or "PMB" number.
  • Virtual office. An address in a staffed business centre (Regus, Davinci and others), usually with mail handling and meeting rooms on demand. Mail can still be handled as a CMRA.
  • Real office or home. A place where the business actually operates: a leased office, coworking desk or the owner’s home — in the US or abroad.

The order that avoids rejections

  1. Pick the state and a registered agent; the agent’s address goes on the formation document.
  2. Decide where IRS and bank letters go: the agent (if it forwards mail), a virtual mailbox or your own address.
  3. Give banks and Stripe the place where you actually run the business — your home or office, even if it is abroad.
  4. Use the same spelling of each address everywhere: mismatches are a common reason for verification failures.

Frequently asked questions

For the state, yes — that is what it is for. For banks it depends: Relay accepts it as the legal address, Wise accepts it as the registered address, Mercury’s help articles disagree, and none of them accept it as the physical or operating address.

Yes, but it is a Commercial Mail Receiving Agency (CMRA) address with a suite or PMB number, and banks, Stripe and address-verification databases recognise it as a mailbox. USPS requires Form 1583 with two IDs to open one.

The place where the business is actually run — usually your home or office abroad. Mercury and Relay both accept an international operating address.

No. Form SS-4 accepts a foreign mailing address, and the EIN itself is free from the IRS.
